DIY TRAINING WEAPON:

construction instructions;..

(…cont. vis #3…)

You have 4×1′ Blank Weapon handles…

There are many uses for these.Be inventive.

Some ideas presented below.

KAMA/KUSARIGAMA:

1 or 2 handles as req’d.

extra REQUIRE: pr.blades app.AUD$70/Drill Kit/ring bolts&etc/length light chain app.AUD$10&clips.

  • Tidy up as req’d.
  • Carefully cut slot for blade tang(very carefully:slot width slightly less than tang thickness).

DIY KUSARIGAMA… SLOT AND TANG VIEW.
  • Mark, Line up and drill placements holes thru slotted handle and (in line with) tang holes.
  • Slot tang in carefully=blade is sharp.
  • Bolts in and tighten firmly-i tend to use some type of “mud”= extreme pressure paste on bolts and self-lock nuts(NO GLUE-in case you need to repair etc). Most blades may have only one placement hole-feel free to add more as/if reqd-i usually use 1or2:sometimes 3 if longer tang: once done, test if ok;add more if still loose etc.
  • If req’d Drill very small lead/pilot hole in end/butt handle&attach ring bolt to handle butt-glue”loctite”generously here.  Let dry(clip makes chain attach/unattach QUICK AND EASY).
  •  Go Train.Simple.Njoy.

NUNCHAKU:

Though technically not a usual “NINJA” WEAPON=good for chain practice.

2 Handles as req’d.

extra REQUIRE:ring bolts & etc/small length light chain app.AUD$2 +clips.

  • Tidy up as req’d.
  • Drill very small lead/pilot hole in one end of each blank handle.
  • Insert & attach ring bolt-glue “loctite” generously here. Let dry.
  • Attach chain+clip(if req’d) to each end.njoy.CAREFULLY.
  • NOTE:Shiro “chamfered” handle end…adds another facet to Weapon. FEEL FREE to experiment.

OTHER DIY WEAPON IDEAS:
  • 3 sectional staff-similar build to nunchaku.

  • trng knife-cut to size, leave round one end to represent handle-other end chamfered perhaps…choices choices…

  • kubotan(pressure point weapon). This requires lil extra work on handle. Use chisel type tool to carefully create grooves/lumps symetrically along Weapon length(Cut to size=quite small weapon=app.12cm).Round or Chamfer ends too.

If you can carve wood…

CARE AND MAINTENANCE:

Training Weapons if built sturdy are long lasting usually. some slight sanding or retouch varnish may get out most knocks.

If there is some cracking/fracturing starting to appear;the following repair method should suffice.

  • Sand smooth as best can.
  • DUCT TAPE affected area tightly and thoroughly going well past damaged area.
  • Refer to blog article below on DUCT TAPE for a historical overview & usage.
  • Retighten and/or reset bolts(if reqd)-DO FIRST if near affected area-can tape over this area but maybe NOT GLUE as below in case further/future maint.req.
  • This is where we use fish line and glue-run line thru water to moisten/then wind tightly around affected area and well past if can/…then tie off tightly and let dry lil-Soak in glue”loctite”all around taped/line bound area;esp.over tape ends/borders.
  • (BE CAREFUL=WEAR GLOVES)

  • LET DRY.
  • NJOY.GO TRAIN SOME MORE.SIMPLE.

Every SHINOBI should take a hand in making their Weaponry. This fosters a TRUER understanding of said Weaponry-its pros and cons. WOOD is a great material for defensive and training weaponry. Shiro shares some stick y ideas indeed it seems. photocredit/thanks:xtitan77

DIY TRAINING WEAPONS:

CONSTRUCTION INSTRUCTIONS:

Every DREAMNINJA SHOULD MAKE A WEAPON-of their own-at least ONCE.

This fosters a TRUER understanding of Weaponry-its pros and cons. A Weapon may save your LIFE by taking anothers-mentally and/or physically. These are REAL RESPONSIBILITIES. Every student of BUDO must face this honestly.

This in essence entails KNOWING it is NOT the WEAPON doing the life-taking…

IT IS THE HAND THAT HOLDS THE WEAPON AND THE OWNER OF THE HAND IS…???

…or as the late Mr.Bruce Lee in one of his movies noted “…boards DONT HIT BACK…”…only WE do. Same goes with a Weapon.       WE ARE THE WEAPON.

That being so-Training Weapons need only to be functional not pretty.

If you are training realistically the Weapon will take many knocks.

Always make them with an eye to resistance/toughness as a priority. In the early days of my training (1984-…) with SOKE MASAAKI HATSUMI, SHIHAN TOSHIRO NAGATO and MasterNINJA Instructor ED LOMAX  we were led through our first Basic Weapon makes.

e.g. a suitable sized length of rope, ends dipped in wax(HOT) for usage in Chain Weapon Training

Another was the HANBO; sanded SMOOTH, varnished HEAVILY…and

as follows:

WEAPON STARTER PACK DIY.

CHOICE OF DIA. SIZE…IS YOURS…MUST SUIT YOUR SIZE AND MEET WEAPON REQ. TOO photocredit/thanks:pinterest

With a budget of  say Aud$250-

  • NEED: x5 lengths of 6′ stick/wood;dia.=what feels comfortable in your grip/hand.(i use 25-30mm).
  • x1 length of 4′ stick/wood ; dia.=1/2 above.
  • A  stain/varnish kit=brush/cleanser/sandpaper/stain/varnish/mix bowl/rags
  • TOOLS=hand saw/marking texta/rule/loctite or similar/fish line/drill & bits/dustmask

PLEASE NOTE: The dia.size is “personal”–best advice from NAGATO SHIHAN was to “shake hands” with the wood.

CAN ALSO save money by not staining tho does add another layer  and  helps overall look imo…

Buy or gather all above.

  1. LEAVE TWO 6’LENGTHS UNCUT.
  2. SAWCUT ONE 6’LENGTH IN HALF.
  3. SAWCUT LAST TWO 6’LENGTHS AT 4′ ea so have 2×4’& 2×2’…
  4. SAWCUT THIN DIA. IN HALF…THEN HALF AGAIN SO HAVE 4×1’…
  5. Knuckle down and sand everything in sight smooth as…wipe &clean up.
  6. Stain if req.-several coats til suits u-let dry…
  7. Varnish several coats=more=tougher-let dry…clean area up.

You are now the proud owner of…2x BO=6’stick; 2x JO=4’stick; 2x HANBO=3’stick; + 4x tessen

SAWCUT THE 2×2’PIECES IN HALF so have 4×1”. These are now BLANK HANDLES.

The next DIY(#4) will explain their use.
