Elephantine Arts of Self-Defence. Martial. Of Yore.

In Our World. Legends do so and tell of Animals. Animal Forms of Self-Defence that mimic and utilise aspects of the Creatures concerned. Hello and Good Wishes.

Thanks also, in particular. To those persistent Souls who persisted with the

recent flurry of Site Posts piled on. On and during the recent

The Topic and Legends easily expansive. Each Samhain Day, a different Theme.

Two Dedications then the Games/activities.

The Postings tried to resemble the same approach. To show the Natural

Philosophy and Natural Earth Changes and Cycles applicable.

Mother Nature, The Green Man. Our Earth.

The initial Chaos, Wintery Decay, Death, Cleanout, Change. Regeneration.

These are perennial Themes oft in Our World Legends.

A LIL… BACK-CHAT…

Within the ARTS OF WAR and the combat oriented MARTIAL WAYS and TRADITIONS of Japan; there are Concepts, Philosophies and Discourses, Scrolls, Denshō and so on. These in many ways… give meaning to and help to define that ART and/or Way.

An Idea or Concept, a Guide,.. oft too… an overview.

Usually Two kinds,.. sometimes three. Physical-Mental-Divine.

These in turn,.. each represent an APPROACH or METHOD of doing… to apply to situations of interest.

These also tend to be carried through and beyond a singular generation of practitioners and indeed are oft generated by important figures of that particular Tradition and bestowed akin to a LEGACY,.. in that, they were obviously considered somewhat integral and necessary in formulation of understanding of said Tradition… at that time and place and then on.

THE SCROLLS OF

HEAVEN, EARTH and MAN.

This NINPO Training Device… is rather unique (click).

The SOKE who enabled and devised this Scroll Set were the Lineage Holders of a large variety of MARTIAL WAYS and TRADITIONS.

(Video Link)

This in itself became problematical as Teaching a Combat oriented ART and Form oft leads… all over the place. Sometimes it seems… to places the Sensei addressed elsewhere, else-time and place and so on.

Thus… consolidation,.. became the choice option.

And thus… these herein Scrolls.

TEN CHI JIN…HEAVEN, EARTH, MAN.

The Scrolls utilise the Fundamental Movements and Techniques of EACH SCHOOL or RYU of the 9 Traditions (click) as Concepts.

These Technique Concepts are open ended… infinite variety, multi-level IDEAS.

Expressions not Endings.

Oft revisited by those who understand and appreciate… the Basics… so-called.

…the ways to move, to evade into safety zones, how moves and turns also generate power, leverage, positional and physical advantages and so on.

Other Tech.,.. highlight such as Strategic and/or useful Body Weaponry movements/counters.

There are even Tech.,.. using tech/basic Chemistry as Defense or Strategy. A wide range of wide-ranging Techniques.

Useful indeed. Lots of contrast.

photocredit/thanks:pinterest

Free Sparring in Japan during the early 1990’s also meant dealing with… a lot of contrasts.

A Training Tip from Shiro here,.. is to get around… the Class where you be.

Adapt to the contrasts.

Mix up your Class opponents/partners whenever you can.

Training with opponents who are MUCH TALLER/HEAVIER is a MUST.

In the REAL… you have no say in the choice.

At that time… Shiro’s choices…

were such as ANTHONY NETZLER, ED LOMAX, ROBERT BAUMGARTEN and DARREN HORVARTH.

Tough choice indeed.

I had nick-names for them all.

They know this not…btw.

DARREN H. was the GREEK GOD,.. a STATUE… (click) Btw,.. he is not Greek but… Physique and approach… ARE… CLASSICAL.

ROBERT B. was the DOLPHIN… (click) Btw,.. he is not a Dolphin but… sleek, quick… and Smashed… like a TIDAL WAVE.

ED LOMAX,.. (click)my first intro to an INSTRUCTOR of the BUJINKAN… we trained and travelled together for a time… housed together too… (Japan and Australia…), we were the first south aussies to live and train with SOKE + CO in 1990 etc..: …and… to me;

… he was the SPIDER/SERPENT SENSEI… he’s not icky at all… but ties me in knots… … as wise as a Serpent… web weaving away my counters… like the Constellation OPHIUCUS…does for… Sagittarius.?.!. my Zodiac… (click);.. anyway… and:

(… Next time YOU Train with him… ask him of his first encounter with the 1990 Entertainment Media of Japan… AND what he had to do… to his Classmates… Shiro included… to please them… the Media that is.

This Tale involved a quite lengthy involved Combat Scenario… which WE ALL HAD TO REPEAT…OFTEN… TILL THE CAMERA PEEPS FINALLY SAID OK, CUT… MANY TIMES.!.

…basically he beat us all good… MANY times that day… IN THE SAME WAY.

Was glad THEY SUPPLIED THE FOOD + DRINK FOR FUEL THANKFULLY (click)… slept well that night too.

Twas great… to have such great Classmates.

Though… oft sore at times… too.

Another TRAINING TIP methinks here;

So help… and be helped by Class-mates.

Through times… good and… sore… too.

Bujinkan Ninpo Fundamentals. An Introduction.

Sensing future changes… the recent BUJINKAN NINPO SOKE consolidated their Teachings. Becoming Heirs to not one,.. but 9 Martial Ways or Traditions impelled such an option. As peace reigns… Martialness… wanes. Student numbers and quality changes, Modern Laws,.. Societal changes too ALL require adaptation. So too any LIVING ART… Martial or otherwise. To begin: I am not a current Instructor;..

(… though graded/licensed to be…1996-Asst. Instr. Shidoshi-ho… currently Shidoshi…):

…I am a long-time Student of the Martial Arts (…incl. NINPO…1984-), a Researcher and Writer.

Any and All Concepts discussed herein are from that Viewpoint.

My simple understanding and so forth.

These Concepts (… AND how they relate to YOU…) are best explained by YOUR Sensei… or Soke preferably. These are the ones who can JUDGE the presentation and advice etc based on your current needs. The overview herein is taken from my Journals, experience and current mood AND is presented as such.

Just an Overview.

Am aware that there are several Versions/Editions of these Concepts and will endeavor to cover the Majority.

Herein an Introduction to the Terms and Concepts.

EACH will then (…soonish…) be further examined in a separate dedicated post.

A LIL… BACK-CHAT…

Within Traditional ARTS OF WAR and combat oriented MARTIAL WAYS and such as the TRADITIONS of Japan; there are Concepts, Philosophies and Terms, Scrolls, Denshō and so on. These give meaning to,… helping to define and clarify that ART and/or Way.

An Idea, Concept, Guide,.. oft… an overview.

Usually of Two kinds,.. though sometimes three. Physical-Mental-Divine.

These each represent an APPROACH/METHOD of Ways of doing…

thus to apply to where needed and so forth.

These also carry through and beyond a single generation of practitioners and are oft generated by somewhat important figures of that Tradition and ultimately bestowed akin to a LEGACY.

These Basic Practices and Approaches were oft considered integral and very necessary in the formulation of understanding of the Tradition.

These i term… THE FUNDAMENTALs.

3 Levels.

E.g.

…PHYSICAL = KATA, THE BASICS.

…MENTAL = PHILOSOPHY.

…DIVINE = APPLICATION OF.

(…OK… BUT…NOW…REAL IZE:

As One spends more Time and Experience gaining… …MARTIAL-NESS… the MEANING itself of these Concepts + co.,.. Changes and Adapts too… oft involving a Deeper or Revelatory type understanding of Inner meaning and Intent/Purpose.

…Shiro’s TRAINING TIP HEREIN THEN: REVISIT THESE… OFT.

E.g. WHEN YOU ARE STUCK… on any level…

…time to revisit… the Fundamentals, the BASICS…)

Perhaps summed well by a LEGENDARY Practitioner:

… In the beginning, as one knows nothing, one does not doubt anything. After having entered the study of combat, various things occupy the spirit; one is obstructed by it and all becomes difficult. Then, as soon as one does not wonder anymore about what one learns, the idea of rules does not have any more impact.

Thus, one does not stick to them anymore to exert the techniques in the various ways.

They emanate from oneself and are then naturally in true harmony with the rules. It is necessary to follow the way of combat, but one must understand this well. To involve oneself by learning the beginning weapon techniques, and all the rules, postures of the body, manners of perceiving, is to deploy the intellect.

When one has gained control, these many rules disappear from the intellectual consciousness. Without conscious reflection, one finally reaches the heart of things. After having assimilated many rules, the merits of this approach accumulate. They reside within the legs, the arms, and the body.

They no longer linger in the spirit. One moves away from the rules, but one conforms to them.

In all circumstances, the techniques become spontaneous. Alone, thought does not stick to anything at this point and, thus, not even demons can disturb one’s being. It is to reach this stage that one practices. When the rules have been assimilated, they disappear…“.

FINDING… FUNDAMENTALs:

Combat oriented ARTS such as NINPO use representations of how to best survive.

From our viewpoint herein these refer to our SCROLLS, DENSHŌ and KATA (click).

These each delineate… APPROACHES, METHODS and WAYS which remind the Student of the HOPEFULLY, best workable ideas to safeguard Oneself from… non-Survival.

These may involve Movements, Weapons or Mind-sets. Intended to minimise harm and very likely generate strategic advantages for the user. Usually based on MIND, physiology, body movements and physics, leverage and body positions and so forth.

A Foundational System or Base perhaps the best definition.
