All Martial Artists are aware of the need to hone their skills.

A large number of Training Concepts/Aids have been developed over the years to do just that.

Online searches will reveal many of use.

The DuckDuckGo search engine may help there. (click)

However…

 WHY SOME OLDER

 BUJINKAN STUDENTS

 STILL PLAY

 WITH THEIR BALLS…

…is one that Shiro can share.

JUGGLING is a Training Aid that is not oft. mentioned.

(…a video tutorial… at end of article…)

Considering it’s benefits have great potential-

SHIRO’s Intel will now reveal…

Why some older BUJINKAN(click) students still play with their balls.

 JUGGLING… BACK IN TIME…

 ON TOP OF THE WORLD…

 well… KOMA HOUSE ANYWAY.

photocredit/thanks:somegamesme

JAPAN… in the early 1990’s…

A somewhat run down Tourist Hostel… KOMA HOUSE.

KOMAGOME,.. JAPAN. (click)

Komagome in Tokyo, Kanto, Japan.

Inside; several Aussie NINPO students… (click)

Soon became a habit to train on the rooftop.

Space was/is a premium issue in JAPAN.

KOMA HOUSE = A steel/concrete structure, ‘flat-roofed’.

Twas there SHIRO was introduced to the ART OF JUGGLING

as a part of our growing training routine(s) suggested by the

SHINOBI SENSEIs.

KOMAGOME btw is linked to the Museum city of UENO and it’s rising Fashion scene vis the YAMANOTE Train Line.

A somewhat sleepy suburb, there is also easy access to several renowned Shrines and Parks including the RIKUGIEN and KYU FURUKAWA Gardens.

In addition to superb examples of current JAPANESE GARDENS, a nowadays rare treat not found in most other Garden areas, is the customary availability of sweets and traditional お茶, ocha,…= JAPANESE TEA (click).

CUPSTAR… YES PLEASE… TEA PLEASE. photocredit/thanks:polkipl

The Garden’s Ponds are the central focus, though the gardens are not without charm and tranquil natural beauty therein. Local shops include traditional arts, crafts and antiques, clothes and so on. Many quite unique.

A quieter locale away from the bigger cities bustle.

An ideal place where tired and sleepy shinobi students could get some rest.

 SIMPLY…

 SIMPLE TO MAKE…

We made or rather…

re-made the JUGGLING balls ourselves.

A child’s hollow bouncy ball.

  • Make a  small split along  the seam.

  • Filled with raw rice via split-hole.

  • Seam split re-glued/re-sealed.

 JUGGLING’s

 ALL-ROUND GOODNESS:

We noticed the benefits to our skills and training becomingly slowly but surely obvious…

at least to us.!.

E.g. better co-ordination ,

improved reflexes,

multi-tasking concepts easier,..

…was fun and entertaining too.

A very cheap training exercise requiring little room…

THOUGH lil height required too indeed.

Therefore… indeed,

SHIRO HIGHLY RECOMMENDS LEARNING THIS SKILL.

 CALL IN THE EXPERTS

There are several speciality JUGGLING sites online-

most with videos and great advice.

Many contain links to groups/clubs as well as detailing

both basic and advanced concepts.

A small selection of HOW-TO

my DUCKDUCKGO(click) Search Engine found.

As with any new or retraining skill-set… practice, practice…

The basic skill(s) can then lead onto the further learning of other ball patterns and throws…

which tend to mesmer children…

and some adults and thus gives you a possible social intro or even training interest to surface.

CLOWNING AROUND WITH BALLS CAN ENHANCE CERTAIN SKILLSETS INDEED… photocredit/thanks:fantasticballoondecoration
 NO NEED
 TO FEEL LIKE A CLOWN

SAYS SHIRO.

Now…

 Y yes…

i’ve dropped so many balls…

…KEEP COUNTING…

…well… maybe not that many…

HOWEVER…

There are many, many benefits…

JUST to reiterate… get used to picking up your balls… oft.

You can offset this by having several xtra balls secreted around your person and thus keep going a lil longer… though then you have… more balls to pick up… eventually.

REMEMBER THE BENEFITS

REMEMBER THE BENEFITS

Part of the joy of learning, refining and enhancing physical motor skills in this gravity defying manner; is that you are definitely though subtly mentally challenging yourself as well… probably without being overly aware of such a process.               e.g.

Shiro found, as confidence and ball handling improved… = …I ‘ WANTED ‘ ‘ NEEDED ‘ ‘ HAD ‘ TO LEARN THE NEXT TRICK OR BIT ETC…

i progressed to learn  and be fairly proficient with several 2 and/or 3 ball combos and patterns quite quickly,.. though my 4 ball work… requires MUCH MORE WORK

i even set the process in a numbered format, down on paper when needed, to help figure out the pattern’s particular order and rhythm etc…

though my FORMULAS were probably not quite like the SCIENCE Style below methinks.

…THE ART OF JUGGLING… CAN INVOLVE SCIENCE TOO… photocredit/thanks:flickr
 THE SCIENCE IS IN…
 ON JUGGLING:

Followers of SCIENCE too, have much to share

on the ART OF JUGGLING.

Reports and Findings of such as:

Improved BRAIN POWER and associated size growth/expansions;

Structural, Motor-plasticity and Skill changes etc too-

acknowledged by several studies and reports.

( ref links lil below…)

Areas of the BRAIN that controlled involvement in both VISUAL and MOTOR ACTIVITY for example were subject to quite extensive new neuron formations.

Understanding and using such results could be applied to other medical fields or applications, perhaps especially those conditions/syndromes involved in trying to stem brain matter loss and degeneration from other causes and illnesses.

SCIENCE says that’s ALL GOOD btw.

SCIENCE REPORTS… JUST JUGGLE INDEED… BAN THE BOMB… AS WELL.

Shiro agrees and says,

with that science stamp of approval… then

JUGGLING could /should also be included in such as recovery and rehab, where applicable…

any hand and eye coordination or focus routines etc…

perhaps included too as a school sport because with JUGGLING,

there is NO LIMIT ON…

 AGE .?. NO LIMIT…
 SHIRO REPEATS…

JUGGLERS… OF MANY AGES. photocredit/thanks:monzzytokyo

In particular and of note…

was the summary of many reports indicated…

age meant NOT much at ALL.

Our Brain’s ability to grow with new skills and hobbies appears to know no LIMITS… age limits that is.

This recognition of how certain skill-sets can enhance mental and physical health should make such MANDATORY… per se in any applicable area of health care.

For example…

if we ALL learnt early such as: to brisk walk oft,…

juggle,…

do cross-words+such,..

knit/crochet,.. paint… carve

slow dance,.. tai chi…

…tasks and hobbies that are simply simple AND creative;

but involve several body+mind areas working together… then, in LIFE later

STAYING ACTIVE in healthy non stress movements etc that also give due honor and purpose to a life well and long lived and can, in many ways only bring people together at such times/periods of our lives.

So sayeth Shiro… and the

Another clever bright spark of an INVENTOR,

JAMES D. CORRIDON

even designed a JUGGLING Aid/Equipment Set complex enough to handle a large range of training position and scenarios.

Shiro…

thinking ‘ inventively ‘.?….

Those fortunate ones who own a netted trampoline type device may get a auto training assist and get the opportunity to perhaps create a new Sport altogether. NJOY.

SO…

WITH NO EXCUSE NOW,..

SHIRO…

 GO PLAY
 WITH YOUR BALLS.!.

SHIRO’s JUGGLING INTEL shows there is indeed much of benefit

for ALL Martial Artists and many others too.

(Video Link)

Via JUGGLING’s required Skill-Sets such as co-ordination and reflexes,… these trained, enhanced, will naturally and automatically AID your approach to SELF-DEFENCE, SPORTs and other LIFE areas too-

to which SHIRO says:

JUGGLE YOUR WORLD,

LIVE YOUR DREAM and

BE LIKE BEE, BELOW BE…

GO PLAY WITH YOUR BALLS.

Ball control… skills of Soccer indeed it seems.

…P.S… a late tip… (…22/12/17…)

…to help learn, then limit the extent/range of the ” throw ” action,.. practice a step away from a wall. This ” forces ” you to perform such near/directly front AND with minimal ” effort “.

…Thus easier to repeatedly control and with the most appropriate strength of action…

…not too much… not too lil’.

…note: the ” throws ” in JUGGLING… are not that powerful per se… rhythm and consistently same height throws very important when learning the basics.

ONCE LEARNT… IMPROVISE and change-ups can be added and practiced.

Njoy the ball control indeed.

iDREAMofNINJA Weapon Intel…#3

Every SHINOBI should take a hand in making their Weaponry. This fosters a TRUER understanding of said Weaponry-its pros and cons. WOOD is a great material for defensive and training weaponry. Shiro shares some stick y ideas indeed it seems. photocredit/thanks:xtitan77

 IDREAMOFNINJA

WEAPON INTEL #3

DIY TRAINING WEAPONS:

CONSTRUCTION INSTRUCTIONS:

Every DREAMNINJA SHOULD MAKE A WEAPON-of their own-at least ONCE.

This fosters a TRUER understanding of Weaponry-its pros and cons. A Weapon may save your LIFE by taking anothers-mentally and/or physically. These are REAL RESPONSIBILITIES. Every student of BUDO must face this honestly.

This in essence entails KNOWING it is NOT the WEAPON doing the life-taking…

IT IS THE HAND THAT HOLDS THE WEAPON AND THE OWNER OF THE HAND IS…???

…or as the late Mr.Bruce Lee in one of his movies noted “…boards DONT HIT BACK…”…only WE do. Same goes with a Weapon.       WE ARE THE WEAPON.

That being so-Training Weapons need only to be functional not pretty.

If you are training realistically the Weapon will take many knocks.

Always make them with an eye to resistance/toughness as a priority. In the early days of my training (1984-…) with SOKE MASAAKI HATSUMI, SHIHAN TOSHIRO NAGATO and MasterNINJA Instructor ED LOMAX  we were led through our first Basic Weapon makes.

e.g. a suitable sized length of rope, ends dipped in wax(HOT) for usage in Chain Weapon Training

Another was the HANBO; sanded SMOOTH, varnished HEAVILY…and

as follows:

WEAPON STARTER PACK DIY.

CHOICE OF DIA. SIZE…IS YOURS…MUST SUIT YOUR SIZE AND MEET WEAPON REQ. TOO photocredit/thanks:pinterest

With a budget of  say Aud$250-

  • NEED: x5 lengths of 6′ stick/wood;dia.=what feels comfortable in your grip/hand.(i use 25-30mm).
  • x1 length of 4′ stick/wood ; dia.=1/2 above.
  • A  stain/varnish kit=brush/cleanser/sandpaper/stain/varnish/mix bowl/rags
  • TOOLS=hand saw/marking texta/rule/loctite or similar/fish line/drill & bits/dustmask

PLEASE NOTE: The dia.size is “personal”–best advice from NAGATO SHIHAN was to “shake hands” with the wood.

photocredit/thanks:bujinkangard

CAN ALSO save money by not staining tho does add another layer  and  helps overall look imo…

Buy or gather all above.

  1. LEAVE TWO 6’LENGTHS UNCUT.
  2. SAWCUT ONE 6’LENGTH IN HALF.
  3. SAWCUT LAST TWO 6’LENGTHS AT 4′ ea so have 2×4’& 2×2’…
  4. SAWCUT THIN DIA. IN HALF…THEN HALF AGAIN SO HAVE 4×1’…
  5. Knuckle down and sand everything in sight smooth as…wipe &clean up.
  6. Stain if req.-several coats til suits u-let dry…
  7. Varnish several coats=more=tougher-let dry…clean area up.

You are now the proud owner of…2x BO=6’stick; 2x JO=4’stick; 2x HANBO=3’stick; + 4x tessen

SAWCUT THE 2×2’PIECES IN HALF so have 4×1”. These are now BLANK HANDLES.

The next DIY(#4) will explain their use.

til next  shiro.
