CENTRALIA burns. All we can do is watch… and learn. We lit this fire in 1962… a Year of the TIGER + Shiro’s birth btw- and still,.. the Town of CENTRALIA burns. Mankind has oft battled NATURE per se… but this disaster was a good intention… bad location indeed it seems. The LEGEND now an integral part of MANKIND’s History with
FIRE.
A town–the whole town.
On fire… in ’62.
Still burning… in 2017…

THAT’s NOT FOG… CENTRALIANS…
CENTRALIA TODAY… LOOKS CAN DECEIVE… THERE’s FIRE DOWN BELOW… STILL…
FIRED UP…
MANKIND’s use of FIRE and it’s inherent ENERGY is obvious.
For Home and Industry.
Without it, things would be difficult and different indeed.
Not to mention darker…

both philosophical & practical ‘ elements ‘ of/in NATURE.
In bare and basic terms;
they can each represent a state of mind (in a fiery mood) or
a state of being (on fire) =
the ELEMENT OF FIRE.
Just depends on the ‘ nature ‘ of the topic discussed…
Philosophical or Practical.
Inner or outer… Fiery stuff indeed.
…NINJA NONSENSE AND NINCOMPOOPS… NOR DO THEY WANT TO… FEEL THAT BURN BY YOURSELF !
So too is it then practical,
to practice and train with the ELEMENTS...
in this case–
to move and jump with and thru FIRE in various ways.
FIRE’s ENERGY is learnt first-hand…
and singe burns heal quick;
though head-hair takes a lil longer it seems.
JUST SOME FIRE… ON MY MIND…
CENTRALIA however, is
now more than singed.
This FIRE we lit in ’62,…
has consumed much more than just
the stuff of it’s DREAMS.
CENTRALIA… STILL SMOKIN… HOT.
CENTRALIA BURNS…
Burn-offs and back-burns, are a sometimes necessary
approach to help lower the Summer Bush-Fire
potential. When properly controlled
and contained that is.
Situated in the US State of PENNSYLVANIA, Columbia County;
the township of Centralia began per se in 1854, a prime
Coal Mining site.
A populace of some 2,ooo gradually called this place Home.
The Anthracite Coal extracted enabled this town to boom
and blossom; for a while. (click)
ANTHRACITE COAL… is Carbon densely packed. This makes it somewhat harder than most other coals and also, harder too to light, in that more oxygen is required to allow combustion. However… if the conditions are right-this Coal burns rather clean and fiercely with little contaminants/pollutants because of it’s high inherent Carbon and thus is capable of great eventual HEAT output for the same reasons… MANKIND has used this element/mineral for a long time.
COAL RESERVES/AMOUNTS IN THE SURROUNDING REGIONS… according to the reference noted above… THERE IS OVER 6 BILLION TONS IN ONE MOUNTAIN RANGE ALONE… not to mention… but i will… and THAT DOES NOT INCLUDE THE ANDES OR ROCKY MOUNTAINS… SO… LOTSA COAL THERE IS. IN LOTSA PLACES. HOPEFULLY NOT BURNING ALREADY… LIKE CENTRALIA’s.
COAL… The Natural processes that formed ANTHRACITIC COAL were of relatively high, yet even temp and pressure. This ‘ compactness ‘ & ‘ stability ‘ means too… you can ‘ work ‘ it… though perhaps keep away from Shiro’s cigars.
THE LEGEND OF–:
HOW WE SET THIS
TOWN ON FIRE.
In MAY of 1962; a routine burn-off set CENTRALIA alight.
A local sanitation crew were determined to get rid
of the town’s potential threats. As the foliage in the
selected area withered under their blaze and gaze…
their error of choice shone through too.
Beneath lay the entrance to a disused shaft.
Beneath lay Coal.
Mixing FLAME and COAL in such a way allowed the initial
access to large/ample amounts of fresh air/Oxygen
which then eventually produced combustion OF THE COAL…
AND COAL SEAM and thus…
lit a FIRE under the very Foundations of the Town itself.
CENTRALIA was now atop
a burning mountain sized lump of COAL,
atop and alight indeed…
a LEGEND OF FIRE appears…
CENTRALIA burns.
CENTRALIA… FEELING THE BURN.
…FIRE PLAY..?
The only safe and long-term option, when playing
with fire…
is to move away.
Or put it out.
Burning wherever the Coal seam led and went, livelihood
too, soon became problematical. No Canary
in the Coal Mine could help now.
Smoke, pollution, sudden flare-ups, pit-hole
formations and the propensity for houses to catch
fire became the norm.
Several photos herein show the potential
for danger and devastation.
CENTRALIAN LANDSCAPE…
Flooding the mine was not a possible option and
the several FIRE-FIGHT attempts were simply
overwhelmed by their task. As Time and FIRE
raged on, the towns people eventually
were put out, moved out and away.
The FIRE stayed. ON.
Since 1962.
CENTRALIA,.. soon enough was left
to BUrn itself out… one day… someday.
We hope.
Still smolderin’ CENTRALIA… NO ZIP CODE ANY MORE… YET 7 STILL ON THE POSTMAN’s ROUTE… SOMEWHERE IN THERE IT SEEMS…
A 2013 Census raincheck indicates some 7 people…
still ‘ live ‘ ( +survive… thus far ) in the surrounds
of this burning TOWN of FIRE.
It appears CENTRALIA’s supporters… are warm-hearted
folk indeed…
though their ZIP CODE was unzipped by… hot-headed
officialdom long ago it seems (click) .
